Massage after knee surgery

I've been asked by a client who recently had minor knee surgery (about a week ago) if it's safe to get a gentle massage for stiffness and swelling. She's still using crutches and has some soreness around the joint.

I couldn't find clear guidelines, so I told her to wait until she feels more comfortable and gets her doctor's okay. But I'd love to hear from others, how soon after surgery is massage usually safe? Thanks everyone

It's best to wait until your doctor gives you the okay. Usually, you'll want to skip gentle massages for the first couple of weeks after surgery so you don't get more swelling or bruising.
