Helping to locate rhomboid minor

Fellow therapists, I've been treating a lot of clients with shoulder and upper back tension lately, and I've been focusing on the rhomboid minor area to relieve some of that discomfort. I've found that some clients have a hard time pinpointing where the tension is coming from, especially if it's radiating to the neck or traps. Does anyone have go to techniques or stretches they've found particularly effective for addressing rhomboid minor tightness? I've been experimenting with a combination of deep tissue and trigger point release, but I'd love to hear how others are approaching this specific muscle.

If your go-to ways to relieve tension aren't helping, it may not be the rhomboid minor that's the problem. I've had the same experience, many clients have a hard time figuring out the source, especially when there's pain that travels up to the neck or traps. Deep tissue and trigger point therapy can help, but I also reccommend using a ball for self-massage and including stretches like thread-the-needle and wall angels to improve flexibiltiy

Also, don't forget to check for tight pecs and any restrictions in the thoracic area, they can often be more of a problem than we think

I usualy do some trigger point work along with scap squeeze exercises and thoracic mobiltiy drills. A lacrosse ball against the wall is also really effective. I like to keep it simple, and it works well

I completely agree with both of you. It's hardly ever just the rhomboid causing the issue, tightness in the pecs, traps, and a stiff thoracic spine can definitely contribute to discomfort in that whole area. I'm on board with the trigger point work, scap squeezes, and using a lacrosse ball, they're all simple, effective techniques that can be easily incorporated into a daily routine.
